Viking 21 Electric Car To Be Shown
EVERETT - An hybrid electric car built by college students and faculty that averages more than 200 miles per gallon of natural gas will be on display this week at the Snohomish County Public Utility District office.
The Viking 21, an award-winning car built at Western Washington University in Bellingham, will be demonstrated Thursday in the PUD auditorium, 2320 California Ave., Everett.
Professor Michael Seal, one of the car's creators, will talk about the car's design and development. It has a range of 50 miles on batteries alone and can travel more than 200 miles at highway speeds using compressed natural gas.
The Viking 21 has won several alternative-fuel races, including the American Tour de Sol, World Clean Air Rally and Pikes Peak Solar/Electric Challenge. The car cost $90,000 to build, but if mass-produced its price could drop to $30,000.
Although the demonstrations will be free for invited students and PUD employees, the general public will be charged $10 each. Tickets are available for lectures at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
